Loft boarding turns a cramped, dusty roof space into safe, usable storage — but only if it's done the right way. The mistake we see again and again is boards laid straight onto the joists, squashing the insulation flat underneath. That destroys the insulation's performance and undoes all the good work of keeping your home warm.
At Insulate Now we fit raised loft boarding. Using sturdy loft legs or a raised support system, we lift the boarded floor above the insulation, so you get the best of both worlds: a strong, level platform to store your belongings and the full depth of insulation working underneath, exactly as intended.
Whether you want a small boarded area around the hatch or a fully boarded loft, here's how we do it and what you can expect.
Why Raised Boarding Matters
Insulation works by trapping air. Modern lofts need around 270mm of insulation to hit recommended standards — but your ceiling joists are usually only around 100mm deep. Board straight onto those joists and you compress the insulation to a fraction of its depth, slashing its thermal value and creating cold spots.
Raised loft boarding solves this completely. We install a system of loft legs that lift the boards well clear of the insulation, preserving its full loft-and uncompressed depth. You keep your warm home and gain a proper storage floor — no compromise.
Strong, Level & Built to Last
Our boarded floors are designed to take the weight of real-world storage — boxes, suitcases, decorations and the bits and pieces every household accumulates. We use robust loft legs at the correct spacing and quality flooring-grade boards, fixed down securely so there's no flex, creak or movement underfoot.
We work around water tanks, pipework, cables and the loft hatch, leaving safe access throughout. Where it helps, we can also create a clear, boarded walkway so you can move around the loft safely rather than balancing on joists.
Boarding & Insulation Together
Loft boarding and insulation go hand in hand, which is why so many of our customers have them done at the same time. We can top up or renew your insulation to the recommended depth and then fit raised boarding over the top in a single, coordinated visit — tidier, quicker and usually better value than doing the two jobs separately.
If your existing insulation is old or contaminated, we can strip it out and dispose of it first, lay fresh insulation, and then board over it properly. One team, one project, one warm and usable loft.
Reclaim Your Loft Space
For most homes the loft is wasted space — or worse, a precarious place to balance boxes on bare joists. Proper loft boarding changes that. It frees up cupboards and spare rooms downstairs, gives you somewhere safe to store seasonal items, and adds genuine practical value to your home.
Every boarding project starts with a free survey so we can assess your joists, headroom, access and how much of the loft you'd like boarded. You'll then receive a clear, fixed price for the work.

Questions
Loft Boarding FAQs
Why can't I just board straight onto the joists?
Because it crushes your insulation. Modern lofts need around 270mm of insulation, but joists are usually only about 100mm deep. Boarding directly onto them flattens the insulation and creates cold spots. Raised boarding on loft legs keeps the full depth working underneath.
How much weight can a boarded loft hold?
Our raised floors are built for normal household storage — boxes, cases and seasonal items — using correctly spaced loft legs and flooring-grade boards. During the survey we'll check your joists and advise on what's suitable for your loft.
Can you board the whole loft or just part of it?
Both. Some customers want a small boarded area near the hatch, others want the full loft boarded for maximum storage. We'll tailor the layout to your needs and budget, working around tanks, pipes and cables.
Will boarding affect my loft ventilation?
Not when it's done properly. We keep eaves ventilation clear and avoid blocking airflow, so your roof continues to breathe and stays free of condensation.
Can you insulate and board at the same time?
Yes, and it's often the smartest option. We can renew or top up your insulation and fit raised boarding over it in one coordinated visit — tidier, faster and usually better value.
